The Events and Outreach Specialist is an exciting opportunity to utilize a high level of communication, initiative and organizational skills while assisting in the development of lifesaving events. This position is responsible for assisting in the execution of large- and small-scale events, ranging from Super Adoption and Strut Your Mutt to MEOM Cat Yoga and local staff appreciation events. The Events and Outreach Specialist must also be able to perform in a fast-acting and collaborative environment, in order to bring ideas to life that will elevate awareness for Best Friends and our mission to make the country no kill by 2025. Responsibilities: Assist with all planning and logistics for Best friends third-party, in-house and national events. Field and respond to all event inquiries in a professional and timely manner. Manage and coordinate volunteer support during events in collaboration with the Best Friend L.A. Volunteer Department. Assist in the expansion and strengthening of our event volunteer team. This includes developing training materials, onboarding processes, team building tactics and ensuring volunteer performance is in line with the Best Friends mission in L.A. Assist with planning, set up and tear down of larger and smaller scale events. Including loading and unloading of event supplies, communicating with rescue partners/vendors/sponsors and working closely with other departments. Provide high quality customer service to everyone involved in the event planning process (vendors, event hosts, general public, coalition partners, etc.), which at times includes handling complaints or other issues. Assist in the gathering of data and compilation of post-event reports. Work a flexible schedule and long hours near and during events. Work within a limited budget that includes sourcing and building vendor relationships in order to secure event donations. Attend third-party outreach events as a BFAS representative to promote our lifesaving programs and educate the public on the NKLA mission. Coordinate and execute in house events- such as MEOM Cat Yoga and Paint Your Pet night- with the goal of driving more traffic into our lifesaving centers. Perform any additional tasks as assigned by the Events and Outreach Lead, LA City Engagement Manager, or Executive Director. Skills & Experience: Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and OneDrive. Knowledge in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is a plus. Ability to use and manage event registration and networking software/websites. Experience with motivating teams of volunteers or staff on a range of projects. Must be able to work independently and use good judgement in the decision-making process. Experience in successful event planning with a variety of events, at local and national levels, on a limited budget. Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands. Comfortable speaking in front of an audience. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy. Knowledge and experience in the animal welfare movement preferred. Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business. Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues. Must be able to work collaboratively with other team members, as well as interdepartmentally to ensure grassroots efforts integrate with and support other organizational activities and priorities. Physical Requirements: Ability to spend extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions (including rain, heat and cold) at events Ability to routinely lift 40-50 pounds Perform strenuous physical labor including bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, etc. Ability to sit and view computer screen for long periods of time Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity Ability to work around all types of animals with basic animal handling skills Lifting and handling animals of varying sizes and breeds. Some travel required Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to event needs, includes weekends and holidays.
