Development Officer Events

An integral part of the STARS team, the Development Officer, Events is responsible for leading and enhancing signature fundraising events of the Foundation. This position will work with the events team to develop strategies to increase revenue, develop donor relationships and oversee all areas of STARS signature event design, coordination, implementation and community outreach for Calgary and southern Alberta.  The successful candidate leads collaboration and advancement of our signature event revenue strategy as planned and budgeted by the Manager, Events (Alberta).

A glimpse of what you'll be doing:

  • Organization and management of various internal and external events ranging from 50 – 1,500 people, including our signature PSAC STARS & Spurs gala event.

  • Development, management, execution and evaluation of our signature event and any other events under this portfolio (this may change year to year), including:

    • Work with an external committee to execute the business plan for the event.

    • Develop and manage a critical path for our signature event that assists leadership in being able to identify critical timelines and event logistics for success.

    • Work closely with signature event committee by attending meetings, identifying actions, and supporting committee members in planning and execution.

    • Develop and track revenue and expense budget for event.

    • Work with venues and vendors to develop contracts for event services and production.

    • Develop sponsorship packages to maximize revenue.

    • Work with sponsors to develop and implement sponsorship activation plans.

    • Secure high quality items for live and silent auctions.

    • Identify opportunities for on-site fundraising including; raffles, pledge drives and other gaming opportunities.

    • Identify new opportunities to market the signature event.

    • Develop and implement traditional media, PR and social media strategies.

    • Work in partnership with Communications to ensure all communications and event marketing materials align with brand standards.

    • Work in partnership with Volunteer Coordinator to ensure resourcing and training of volunteers for event.

    • Work in partnership with Stewardship team for timely recognition of donors and sponsorship fulfillment reports.

    • Work in partnership with Donations Processing team to ensure timely reporting of donations and receipting.

    • Ensure accurate tracking of donors and sponsors in Raiser’s Edge.

    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of event record keeping, including budgets and critical path with Event Manager and finance team.

    • Support team members and volunteers in achieving fundraising, participation and awareness targets for events.

  • Review event processes and resources continually, making strategic improvements as required.

  • Work with Event Manager to determine event portfolio ROI.

  • Work with Event Manager and external stakeholders to develop new initiatives to increase event revenue.

  • Secure sponsorships and partnerships for all events, including cash sponsorships and in-kind as required.

  • Ensures integrity of data and report generation.

  • Support other internal and external events as required.

  • Other duties as required.


What skills we're looking for:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience managing high profile events with +1500 participants.

  • A minimum of 5 years direct leadership of events with the highest corporate brand awareness where STARS serves the community.

  • A minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience is essential.

  • 3-5 years leading communications and marketing initiatives for large scale events.

  • Proven ability to work well under pressure, in an ever changing work environment, managing projects simultaneously by utilizing exceptional organization skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster relationships in the community and with executive board members and executive level sponsors.

  • Capable of establishing effective and professional relationships with team members, volunteers and donors.

  • Refined verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sales skills and ability to build productive business relationships at all levels.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work evenings or weekends to support events.

  • Able to negotiate, organize and work under pressure.

  • Ability to work well within a committee structure is a must.

  • Experience with software such as Raiser’s Edge an asset.

  • Expert level proficiency in all MS office applications.

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field considered a strong asset (communications, special events, public relations preferred).
