SUMMARY OF POSITION

Responsible for the smooth and professional operation of museum public programs, including special events.  Also responsible for coordinating the schedule and evaluation of programmed performances for the museum including but not limited to fine arts Spotlight Performances, cultural performances, and special events.  Must be able to work Tuesday through Saturday including Family Free Nigh on Thursdays until 8pm.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

Brief Description of Responsibility

 

Design, implement and evaluate educational and special events, and other visitor programs including establishing new contacts and developing relationships within the Houston arts community.

 

Assist the Director of Gallery Education with budget development, revisions and monitoring spending for special events including contracts and payment of invoices.

 

Coordinate the logistics for special museum events such as Halloween, New Years’ Noon and MLK Day as well as key cultural events such as Fiestas Patrias and Mid-Autumn Festival at CMH and FBCDC.

 

Design, implement, and report on Spring Break programs, summer programs and all special holiday programs.

 

Ensure that appropriate supplies are purchased in a timely and cost effective manner.

 

Work closely with the Director of Gallery Education and the Director of Public Relations to promote visitor programs, including management of the WonderWeek, Spotlight, and Special events monthly calendar copy.  Update information on server in a timely manner.

 

Collect appropriate data for reports to donors.

 

Assist with the planning of activities for ongoing WonderWeeks.

 

Train Discovery Guide staff for any special event programming.

 

Manage and hold monthly meetings with the Kids’ Committee, our team of kid advisors for the museum.

 

Coordinate the interview and evaluation process for the Kids’ Committee, and work closely with Educators for each month’s agenda.

 

Develop and maintain a system for organizing and storing supplies used for special events.

 

Attend professional meetings as needed. Develop and maintain networks with other museum education professionals.

 

Work with Volunteer Coordinator to obtain volunteers for special events.

 

Attend all meetings as required including but not limited to Exhibits Planning, Gallery Educators, Programs, PR, WonderWeek, Education Retreats, and DG Mandatory Meetings.

 

Manage the Educational Events Assistant who design and implements our Junktion Programming, event workshops, and some special programming.

 

Interact with visitors in the galleries as needed/assigned.

 

The following are Essential Functions of the job & may not be altered without changing the basic purpose and objectives of the position:

  • Planning and implementing special programs for the visitors including Spotlight performances, special events, and cultural performances.
  • Lead, supervise and coordinate cultural events.

  • Must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule which includes weekends and some Thursday Free Family Night.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Experience with coordinating events and programs.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children in learning environments.
  • Experience developing and maintaining community partnerships

 

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere.
